What people say

3 out of 5 stars

“It’s a small park in Orange Park. Amenities include parking, trash cans, dog waste bags, a pier, a convenient kayak launch, a fish-cleaning station with running water, and picnic tables; however, there are no grills. Unfortunately, we didn't catch any fish. Be prepared for the fact that getting right down to the water is difficult due to the wet conditions—you’ll need boots, or else you’ll get your feet wet. A major downside of the park is the lack of restrooms.”

“Beautiful park to take pictures. Located on the St. John’s River. I can’t believe I’ve lived here my whole life and never knew about this hidden gem! Nice views and lots of shade trees for a nice picnic. They even have a kayak launch & floating dock you can fish from.”

Somer’s Sunshine Park is named for Somer Thompson, a 7-year old Orange Park resident who was kidnapped and murdered in 2009. Spurred by the tragedy, the Town Council dedicated the 1 acre parcel of land as a park that would bear Somer’s name and provide a peaceful place to spend time with family and friends. Business owners and residents rallied together and donated approximately $25,000 in labor and materials. Community members and local organizations gathered in March 2012 to put the finishing touches on the park, which includes a walking trail, butterfly garden, shade trees, picnic areas and benches.
