The new location is Grumpy’s largest restaurant yet, with a full bar, party room and free game room for kids. Grumpy’s Biggest Location YetThe restaurant sits in the former Dick’s Wings & Grill space at East West Parkway and U.S. 17. Dick’s left the building in 2023, and Grumpy’s renovated it for the new location. Grumpy’s calls it its largest restaurant to date. It also has a party room, and it is the first Grumpy’s with a full bar and a free kids game room. Before Monday’s grand opening, the restaurant held a two-day soft opening Oct. 9 and 10 that raised money for the First Coast YMCA and the Fleming Island High football program. |

About Grumpy’sGrumpy’s started in Orange Park in 1999 as the retirement project of a U.S. Navy cook known as Chef Grumpy, “The Bad Mood Dude.” Daniel and Morgan DeLeon bought the restaurant in 2017, relaunched it as an American and Southern diner and began franchising in 2019. The flagship is still at 834 Kingsley Ave. in Orange Park. Fleming Island is the sixth Grumpy’s restaurant, joining Orange Park, Middleburg, Neptune Beach, St. Johns and Wildlight in Nassau County. The Fleming Island restaurant is owned and operated by the Hoard family, Dell Hoard Sr. and Dell Hoard Jr., who also own the Middleburg Grumpy’s on Blanding Boulevard. What’s on the menuGrumpy’s menu is built around diner classics, with everything from big breakfasts, omelets and eggs Benedict to chicken and waffles, burgers and fresh-squeezed orange juice. One of its signatures is the red, white and blue waffle topped with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream. The promise is “a hungry-person’s portion at a working-class price,” and you’ll also find daily and weekly chalkboard specials, sandwiches, homemade soups, salads, signature coffee, homemade hot chocolate and desserts. |

Why Does Grumpy’s Close at 2?Grumpy’s is built around breakfast, brunch and lunch. The Fleming Island restaurant opens at 5:30 a.m. and closes at 2 p.m. every day, so there is no dinner service. The menu cover answers that one directly. It says Grumpy’s is committed to great food and service “all while closing at 2:00PM, providing the ultimate family, work and life balance.” For the rest of us, the takeaway is simple: come hungry, and come early. |

Walnut Pancakes, Bacon and a Warm WelcomeOn Tuesday, Oct. 13, I went back to sit down, eat and get a feel for the place. |
While I was there, I met Morgan DeLeon, owner of the Kingsley Avenue Grumpy’s franchise in Orange Park. I also met Joy Owens, whose parents own the Fleming Island and Middleburg franchises, and my server, Maddy Baity. Morgan, Joy and Maddy were all very welcoming and made sure I had everything I needed. |
